15 Day Hatha Vinyasa Retreat, Yogi Village, Sri Lanka

Take part in this two week Hatha and Vinyasa retreat and learn age old traditions with a new age twist.

Flow freely and breathe deeply. Connect with yourself on new levels and with the beauty of the natural world that surrounds you.

This is an enchanting place that sprinkles its magic dust on those who pass through.

There is no aspiration here to be anything other than what it is - a lovely, playful but honouring folly.

The founders and villagers welcome you to enjoy the spirit.

Intuitive, timeless knowledge seems somehow steeped in the land itself, it is a place in which traditional lifestyle comes easily and naturally.

Perhaps more than anything else here, it is this uncanny sense of peace and tranquility - and one's mindless awareness of it that is its most striking feature.

The village team help all guests attain the ingredients required for a balanced existence: a personal and immediate relationship to family, community, nature and the spiritual world.

This package includes twin share accommodations, one massage per week, two daily yoga classes, meals, snacks, drinks, a one-on-one consultation with their resident doctor, a full-day excursion per week, bicycle rentals.

Location

Western Province, Sri Lanka

The capital of the North Western province of Sri Lanka, Kurunegala is full of sights and sounds that can interest any intrepid traveller. Here you will find natural wonders such as the Kurunegala Lake.

Kurunegala is a market town named after the giant elephant shaped rock which stands over its township, Kurunegala enjoys a pleasant location overlooked by huge rocky outcrops. With many coconut and rubber plantations surrounding the area waiting to be explored. Giant boulders, which are strangely similar to various animals dominate the landscape.

Kurunegala is almost an hour away by car from Kandy and Dambulla. Public and private buses are also a possibility.

Food

Local village life is based on a vegetarian tradition, with the staple diet centered on highly nutritious strains of red rice. Meals are cooked in clay pots over open fires and are largely produced from the organic crops grown here. Vegetables, yams and melons fill the gardens, along with mature banana, mango, papaya, jack and breadfruit trees.

All meals are cooked in the indigenous style featuring rice, curries, salads, buffalo curd, local savories and sweets and, of course, fruits.

All meals, snacks and drinks are included in your stay.

Twin Share Hut at Ulpotha

Twin Share Hut

At the centre of the village is the Walauwwa, the traditional main house now restored around a central stone courtyard with an ancient well. The adjoining Ambalama, an open sided pavilion, provides a covered sitting area with mats, cushions, and beautiful views towards the surrounding hills and which is where meals are served. Accommodation is provided in exquisitely but simply detailed wattle and daub huts. These are built using traditional methods and materials, and consist of open sleeping/living areas covered with a pitched roof of thatched palm fronds. Each accommodates two people.

Much use has been made of clay, stone, wood, pottery and fabrics which reflect traditional village aesthetics. By design there is no electricity and life is lived by the rhythm of the day.
Though the loos [toilets] are modern and clean and the showers are open-air, they are not en-suite in keeping with traditional village practice.

Venue   Ulpotha
Ulpotha, Venue for 15 Day Hatha Vinyasa Retreat, Yogi Village, Sri Lanka

Ulpotha has been a retreat site for thousands of years and remains a perfect place for a yoga holiday or an Ayurveda retreat in the heart of Sri Lanka. It's a beautiful hideaway is open to guests for holidays and retreats for part of the year and is a place of total peace.

It's a traditional working village in Sri Lanka cradled on the one side by low mountains and a lotus-ringed lake and on the other by tiny emerald green paddy fields. The focus is on the restoration of an ageless agricultural way of life and creating an idyllic environment for Yoga and Ayurveda retreats. This includes bio-diverse organic farming and reforestation of the land and its immediate surroundings.

Guests are welcome for retreats at Ulpotha, Sri Lanka, for six months of the year (it goes back to being a traditional village for the rest of the year). Those who come for retreats will find a natural sanctuary of exceptional beauty in Sri Lanka’s heartland. The most attractive retreat activity can be said to be to simply relax in its remarkable atmosphere of peace and calm.

The retreat center is run on a non-profit basis. All revenues from Yoga holidays and Ayurveda retreats are spent supporting Ulpotha's villagers and the surrounding local community. The rates reflect the delicate balance to achieve in generating the funds needed to support Ulpotha without subjecting it to visitor numbers that might overwhelm its natural environment.

Guests are accommodated in one of a number of tastefully decorated traditional wattle and daub huts sprinkled through Ulpotha, where living is by design a communal and shared experience in nature's embrace. There are 11 charming guest huts in Ulpotha, 10 of which are for two guests and one for three.

All of them are built using traditional wattle and daub with comfortable beds, excellent mosquito nets, cupboards, fresh water, towels and offer a sarong to wear and take home. The huts are of an open, airy design that facilitates the sense of being one with nature. Twice a year, each hut is hand painted using different coloured clays, where no designs are ever repeated. Much use has been made of clay, stone, wood, pottery and fabrics that reflect traditional village practices and aesthetics.

Inside Ulpotha is a treatment centre where one can have complete Ayurveda treatments administered by the resident doctor. Proceeds from these go towards funding the newly created Free Clinic for the surrounding local villages. Guests can go for walks in the mountains, swim in the lake, go bird watching, have massages with our visiting massage therapists, indulge in herbal steam baths, or go on excursions to some of the many intriguing cultural sites that surround Ulpotha. Alternatively, one can do what Ulpotha is most amenable to – relax and hang out in one of the many hammocks and hanging beds that dot the grounds or in our lovely tree-house or lake huts.

Ulpotha offers transportation for all of their guests. From the airport all the way to Yala Park, there are numerous options available to you. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can also reach the venue via private and public buses.
