Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Imagine a sea that radiates with wildlife and is almost perfect when it comes to shape, color and temperature. Located on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Mal Pais offers tasty waves, creative kitchens and surfers galore. This surfing zone is known for its year round consistent waves, with the average swell running in the 3-5 foot range, breaking over beautiful sandy beaches.

Mal Pais has become one of Costa Rica's most life-affirming destinations full of Surf, SUP, and Yoga classes. The quiet surf village of Mal Pais provides a great opportunity for visitors to escape the hustle and bustle of more crowded destinations. It is an excellent place to enjoy the incredible natural surroundings in relative peace. Reflecting this relaxed attitude, the village of Mal Pais offers relatively few services with regards to tours. However, canopy tours are available and one can also take horseback rides along the beach.

Alternating between long stretches of sand and large patches of rock, the Mal Pais beach divides the ocean and the green jungle full of mischievous monkeys. The entire area unfurls along one coastal road that rambles from Santa Teresa in the north to Playa El Carmen, the area's commercial heartbeat, and then terminates in the quiet village of Mal País.

Juan Santa Maria International airport, in San Jose, is a 75-minute trip by land along the Pacific Coast to the Puntarenas ferry dock. From there, a 1.5-hour crossing of the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera is meant to be a peaceful journey. Once you’ve soothed your soul with ocean breeze travel, you will need to journey through land again for 1.5 hours, passing through Tambor and Cobano, before arriving at your remote destination of Mal Pais. Flights from San Jose to Tambor are also available and are a short 40min drive from Tambor to Mal Pais.
