A unique feature of our training is our approach to asana practice: The asanas are practiced and taught in the Rajadhiraja tradition of Tantra yoga, offering ancient knowledge on the deeply transformational effect of asanas with regards to our hormonal and chakra system - rarely taught in other yoga schools. You will learn and practice 108 of the most important asanas as they relate to healing, chakra balancing, body/mind integration and heart opening. As you will sharpen your teaching skills through in-depth alignment and adjustment workshops, you will develop a new perspective of yoga and life itself. You will also be encouraged to develop your creative skills in yoga teaching and sequencing for theme-based classes. Furthermore, we will explore a variety of yoga styles such as Yin, Anusara, Iyengar, Power yoga, Hot yoga, Sivananda and Vinyasa so as to compare the sequencing effects of each style.

Another unique feature is lifelong personalized mentoring offered by Ganga Devi, the principal teacher on this course, to those who wish to receive guidance after the completion of their training. Ganga has taught and practiced yoga and meditation for more than thirty years. She has also trained and performed as a professional dancer of Bharatanatyam – the classical dance of India.

Requirements

A high degree of self-motivation is required for all aspects of the course. A basic knowledge of yoga postures and philosophy is helpful but not essential. A sincere desire to learn and openness to the teachings of yoga is required. Training to be a yoga teacher requires dedication and faith in the process of yoga. The practice and especially the teaching of yoga demand a high degree of self-discipline and purity. To ensure the success of the program, participants are required to attend all spiritual activities, meditation sessions, lectures and asana classes.

HOURS + TOPICS

Learn how to prescribe asanas for 20 most common conditions in the light of bio-psychology. Look at some major conditions and the therapies prescribed for these conditions based on yogic science. Determine the morning and evening asana practice for each condition and also the necessary lifestyle changes and other yogic techniques - fasting, kriyas, mudras, bandhas, meditation - and how they should be adopted to various conditions.

Study Ayurvedic life regimes for each dosha and how does disease happen. Study the 6 tastes and the digestive process, and the Methods of Reintegration (Reduction therapy, Detoxification therapy and Tonification).

Look at the yogic and ayurvedic principles of eating, while also integrating the Western scientific approach to nutrition, look at personalizing your dietary regime and the use of herbs.

Exploration of the major body systems in relationship to asana practice – in particular the nervous system, the lymphatic system and the endocrine system. The effect of endocrine glands on our psyche. Study applied anatomy related to the physical aspects of yoga (muscles and how they are used in 24 selected asanas). Bio-Psychology is the study of glands and hormones and their profound effects on all physical and mental (psychic) functions like growth, digestion, energy levels, emotions.

Learn the Power of Mudras, Lymphatic self-massage in asana classes, the Aura (Ojas) and how to develop it, balancing energy, Chakra healing, Neti, Nauli, Kapalabhati and tongue cleaning, practice Bandhas: Jalandhara, Uddayana and MulaBandha.

Study an advanced understanding of the process of breathing, expand the repertoire of breathing exercises, advanced pranayama techniques include: Ujjayi, Surya Bheda, Sitali, Sitkari, Bhramari, Anuloma/Viloma will be practiced daily, the 10 Vayus (Pranas).

Learn the science of Sun salutation – in depth analysis of this important sequence, incl. the history, breakdown, benefits and symbolism of the same, Asanas – the practice of 108 asanas and asana families, refining asanas, transitioning out of asanas, the constituent elements of asanas, Yoga Nidra – Visualisations for Yoga Nidra and how to conduct a Yoga Nidra class, and asanas for each chakra and gland.

Study the 6 schools of Indian philosophy, Hatha Yoga in the light of Tantra, Rasayana and the ancient alchemists, Kashmiri Shaivism and Shaiva Siddhanta, the influence of Shiva on Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, the influence of Krsna Shrii Shrii Anandamurti and contemporary yoga, the interplay of the Vedas and Tantra.

Study Public Speaking, developing your voice and communication, traditional approaches to Asana Sequencing, the 5 principles of Asana Sequencing, creating theme-based classes, setting an intention, sequencing classes for each chakra, sequencing restorative classes, develop your observation skills, detailed alignment workshop, detailed adjustment and correction workshop.

Learn how to integrate a variety of simple meditation techniques into your class, guided meditation and personal meditation techniques, and mantra initiation (if desired).

This subject covers Ashtanga - the 8 limbs of yoga as taught by Patanjali, yoga ethics and moral principles – workshop and discussion, the koshas – the five layers of the mind – deeper understanding, Kaoshikii and Tandava: dynamic yogic dances for women and men.

Learn Kirtan: devotional chanting of Sanskrit mantras, how to understand chanting and its benefits on the emotions, creativity and artistic expression for spiritual development and upliftment, Bhajans (devotional songs), Prabhat Samgiita (devotional music for mental expansion) and various types of Bhakti and Kevala Bhakti.

Study the 4 stages of Sadhana, the 3 stages of psychic evolution, the 7 secrets of success as given by Shiva (and how to apply them in daily life), the symbolism of Shiva, Vidya and Avidya Maya - from ignorance to knowledge, the 4 states of consciousness, creation of the universe and the Tantric theory of creation (Shiva & Shakti), how to incorporate philosophy in a class setting, and the 7 stages of Samadhi.

Learn how to speak about what you are doing, presentation skills, Anatomy of a successful workshop, how to organize and plan for a yoga retreat, find your dharma and contribute to the world, and how to go beyond business into living your yoga and changing the world.

Certification

The Himalayan Yoga Institute is accredited by Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance registers both individual yoga teachers and yoga teacher training programmes (schools) that have complied with educational standards established by the Alliance. A Yoga Alliance Accreditation will give you worldwide recognition. Upon completion of the course you will receive an internationally recognized diploma from the Himalayan Yoga Institute. The title you receive upon completion of the standard course is ‘Yoga Sikshaka’ (yoga teacher), whereas upon completion of the advanced course you receive the title of 'Yoga Vaidya' (expert of yoga).

TIME OFF One day per week is lecture-free to enjoy some leisure time and excursions specific to the area and to deepen your study. You will have a chance to see Mamallapuram (or Mahabalipuram) on the way from Chennai to the venue. Mamallapuram is a UNESCO protected heritage site, displaying gorgeous stone carvings and temple structures of great beauty. You will visit Auroville (City of Dawn) - an experimental township in Villupuram district mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu, India with some parts in the Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry) in South India. Pondicherry will be another destination. Pondicherry, called Puducherry in the local language, is a unique town, which used to be a French colony, hence it combines French and Indian architecture. Here you will visit temples, the promenade and the Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry. The second excursion will be to the little town of Tiruvannamalail, which has a longstanding spiritual history and inhabits the famous Arunachala hill, considered to be the heart centre of the Earth. Here the legendary sage Sri Ramana lived and guided many spiritual seekers. One of the largest temples dedicated to Shiva has been built here.

The yoga retreat venue is a beautiful villa near the model community Auroville in South India. It is located nearly 2 miles away from the Auroville Beach. A long private driveway leads you to the 4500sq ft villa set in grounds of 1.5 acres. The villa is built in the traditional kerala style using rammed earth. This eco-friendly method of construction results in a structure that is naturally cool throughout the year.

The house has 4 bedrooms with private bathrooms, a family room, a large kitchen and utility and an open terrace. The large central courtyard acts as a focal point of the villa allowing in natural light and ventilation. The villa is simply decorated yet has all the comforts of home. The house is sufficiently away from the main road to keep out the noise and ensure almost total silence.  Enjoy some of the organically grown fruits and vegetables from the garden.

Three yogic vegetarian meals are offered daily and included in the program. Meals are nutritious, meeting the requirements of a yogic diet. Fresh fruits and tea as well as snacks are also included. India is a melting pot of flavours and cuisines and the south has a rich history of cooking and sharing traditional recipes. Expect plenty of nourishing robust food that will carry you through your four weeks intensive training.

Auroville is an experimental community in southern India. It was founded in 1968 by the spiritual leader Mirra Alfassa as a town where people from all over the world could live in harmony. Its focal point is the Matrimandir, a futuristic, spherical temple covered in gold discs. Auroville Botanical Gardens protects the region’s tropical dry evergreen forest. Auroville Beach is a long sandy stretch with gentle surf.
 
The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity – in diversity. Today Auroville is recognised as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness, also concerned with - and practically researching into - sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.

The residents of Auroville come from some 45 nations, from all age groups (from infancy to over eighty, averaging around 30), from all social classes, backgrounds and cultures, representing humanity as a whole. The population of the township is constantly growing, but currently stands at around 2,160 people, of whom approx. one-third are Indian.

At the centre of the township lies the Peace Area, comprising the Matrimandir and its gardens, the amphitheater with the Urn of Human Unity that contains the soil of 121 nations and 23 Indian states, and a lake to help create an atmosphere of calm and serenity and to serve as a groundwater recharge area.

Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu state. Its French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter, with tree-lined streets, mustard-colored colonial villas and chic boutiques. A seaside promenade runs along the Bay of Bengal and passes several statues, including a 4m-high Gandhi Memorial.

Pondicherry is well connected to the rest of India via a large network of National Highways, a Railway Terminal and a Domestic Airport. It is also in close proximity to International airports.
