Southern Province, Sri Lanka

Tangalle, Aranwella is a large town located in Hambantota District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the largest towns in southern province and has a mild climate, in comparison to the rest of the district, and sandy beaches. Tangalle is a regionally important fishing port, situated on one of the largest bays in Sri Lanka, which is protected from the ocean by an enclosing reef. It is a centre of tourism and a popular holiday destination on the south coast. In the town centre there is an old Dutch fort which is used as a prison today. The Dutch and subsequently the British used Tangalle as an important anchorage on the southern coast of the island. The Dutch Fort, Rest House and Court House are a few remaining examples of Dutch architecture in Tangalle. For a spot of shopping, sightseeing, dining, head to the lively town of Tangalle on the southern coast. Situated in Tangalle is the rural village of Aranwella, just eight kilometers - or a 15 minute drive - from Tangalle.

Maya, Venue for 5 Day Rural Yoga & Meditation Retreat in a Manor House

Step back in time and experience the magic of a 19th century Sri Lankan Manor House. Built by one of the ruling elite in Ceylon, Aranwella Walauwa is a classic illustration of 19th century properties - a little gem in the Tangalle area. Drawing on influences from Dutch and British colonial architecture, Aranwella Walauwa’s restitution provides a glimpse into history. Seamlessly blending Sri Lankan heritage with contemporary design, the atmospheric five suite villa pays homage to its original features - a simple harmony of modern luxe with local charm and style.

Maya or Illusion in Sanskrit is the creation of interior designer Niki Fairchild. She first stumbled upon the old Walauwa in 2004 and was instantly enchanted. Together with distinguished Sri Lankan architect Pradeep Kodikara, Niki renovated and brought back to life this heritage home. The stunning result blends period features with unique style: enhanced space, sky-high ceilings, open views, sleek lines and supremely comfortable living.

Maya is situated in the quaint village of Aranwella next to the ancient village Buddhist temple, only 8km from Tangalle and the beautiful beaches of the southern coast. The journey from the International airport will take 3 and half hours and approximately 3 hours from Colombo. Cinnamon Air sea planes fly several times a week to Dikwella - the flying time is only 35 minutes and from there it's a 20 minute drive to Maya. Sri Lankan flies 5 days a week from the International Airport in Colombo to Hambantota Airport. The flying time is 30 minutes. The drive from Hambantota Airport to Maya is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
