  Alajuela, Costa Rica

Pavas is a district in Alajuela, the second largest city in Costa Rica. Located in the north-central part of the country, bordering Nicaragua to the north, it is a busy agricultural hub, where farmers bring their products to market. A simplistic town, Pavas tells the history of Costa Rica in every street and corner offering moments to tourists to just relax and indulge in life. It is a good base for exploring the countryside to the north.

With modern amenities, local charm and a close proximity to the international airport, Pavas, Alajuela is a convenient base for sightseeing in the Central Valley. It maintains a provincial atmosphere where locals relax on front porches greeting the people passing by and mango season incites a lively festival city wide. Boasting a movie theater, mall, internet cafes and plenty of shopping, Pavas, Alajuela has all the frills of a modern city, but moves at a gentler pace and is easier to navigate than nearby San Jose.

Most visitors to Costa Rica are unaware that the Juan Santamaria International Airport is in Alajuela, not San Jose. Just a five-minute drive into town, visitors will find a variety of accommodations for most budgets and tastes. Taxis are often the easiest and a cheap way to get around the town. Taxies are red and there are many taxi stands scattered around the city. While the orange airport taxies will accept US dollars, the red taxies will only accept Costa Rican colones. Tipping is not expected, but you can let a taxi driver keep the change.
