Fuerteventura lies just 100km from the African coast, and there are striking similarities not only with the landscape, but also the houses, with their North African–style flat roofs for collecting rainfall. In other ways, Fuerteventura emulates its neighbour Lanzarote, only with more colours. Its volcanoes resemble piles of saffron, chilli and coriander, surreal triangles of exotic spices.

Most visitors, however, are more interested in mastering the waves and the wind than contemplating the abstract aesthetics of the scenery. The second-largest island in the archipelago after Tenerife, Fuerteventura has year-round sunshine and the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries.

There is no other island in the Canaries with as many enormous sand dunes and long sandy beaches. Even though most of the land on Fuerteventura consists of stone and rock, this island has some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe and it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009.

Water sports are very popular in Fuerteventura. Every year hundreds of surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers, and divers descend on Fuerteventura and during July the island is host to the P.W.A world windsurfing speed and slalom event at Sotavento in the south.

You can book your flight to come directly to Fuerteventura airport (FUE). For a wider choice of flights, you can fly to Lanzarote Arrecife airport (ACE) and take the 20-minute ferry crossing to Fuerteventura. The last ferry crossing to Corralejo from Playa Blanca, Lanzarote is at 19:00 so please make sure your flight arrives by 16:00 if travelling with luggage.
