Discover the Best Yoga & Surf Retreats

Yoga & Surf Retreats have grown in popularity in recent years.

You don't have to be an advanced level of either to enjoy a retreat like this.

Both complement each other and all retreats cater for beginners.

And if you are big into either one of them already then the other will be a delight to explore.

How are Surfing & Yoga related?

Yoga complements surfing in many ways.

Yoga builds core strength, flexibility and balance.

And with yoga comes mind & energy focus and breathing techniques.

These techniques help to reduce stress and stay cool & calm in tricky situations out in the waves.

Physically, Yoga lengthens the muscles...whilst in the water the muscles are constantly contracting,

and so Yoga helps the body with what it has to go through in the water. Injury is then less likely.

These are the practical and physical points.

Yoga is great to practice to support surfing.

And a surfer should not find it hard to adapt to yoga.

Same way a Yogi should find surfing not too difficult to adapt to.

There's a spiritual connection that goes far further than this.

A connection between the flow and balance of ourselves and nature.

A spiritual connection.

Flow

Yoga & Surfing can both be seen as about flow of energy.

On the ocean behold the sheer awesomeness of nature's power and it's never-ending flow.

In Yoga see the flow of body & mind. Yoga opens us to ourselves and our energy balance as we deepen our practice and understanding.

Both flow. And the ocean's flow isn't constant of course. Just the same as all of us.

But it's not the destination, it's the journey.

So who is the writer here?

Hi, my name is Kelly, I am based on the Sunshine Coast of Australia.

For the past decade, I have traveled and worked extensively across the world in health resorts, detox centers, raw food restaurants and yoga retreats.

Read about my experience of mixing yoga with surfing on a retreat

Being Australian with the ocean literally on my doorstep, it has always been assumed that I can surf well.

When I would share that I had never put foot on a surfboard in my life, I would be met with baffled looks.
I decided that the time had come to remedy this, and signed up for a yoga and surf retreat in the surfers paradise of Bali.

I had opted for an exclusively women's retreat, confident of more support and solidarity! Merging the surfing lessons
with yoga helped, knowing that the sessions on the mat would help maintain balance and strength.

A touch of comforts, daily massages and delicious healthy food was part of the beach getaway.

The women I shared the retreat with had varied experience with both surf and yoga.
Sunrise yoga sessions helped us to open and awaken our physical body and fid a place of balance that would help us with the oceans rhythm.

Come mid morning we swapped our mats for surfboards, and an instructor helped ease us into the waves with a helpful lesson on the sand first.
With an instructor to every three guests, we enjoyed plenty of support and on the first lesson, we had all managed to stand up on a wave, just.

The yoga and surf sessions were broken up with plenty of free time to enjoy excursions around the island that ranged from cooking classes to volcano hikes.
Our group developed a quick bond and our time was full of laughter and chatter.

By the end of the week, I was catching small waves, easily ducking under larger ones.
The synergy of yoga and surf became more evident day by day as I found my flow and balanced strength with surrender.
Each day was enlivening, I pushed through boundaries and embraced new opportunities here.
